REA Scholarship Program

REA’s Scholarship Program is funded through unclaimed capital credits. This is money that would otherwise be claimed by the state of Minnesota. In 2025, REA will award NINETEEN $1,000 scholarships.

The deadline to apply for the REA scholarships is March 1, 2025. Winners will be announced at the Annual Meeting on April 23, 2025.

Scholarship Details

  • The scholarship recipient must be a graduating high school senior whose parent/legal guardian is an active member of REA.
  • An active member is someone receiving electric service from REA with the membership in the parent/legal guardian’s name.
  • High school seniors include those attending public, private, parochial, or homeschool settings.
  • Students of both REA member employees and REA directors are eligible for the scholarship program.
  • Scholarships will be awarded to students attending an accredited institute of higher education, including a college, university, trade school, community college, junior college, or business college that offers associate degrees, certificates, and diplomas. All such institutions must be income tax exempt (see Minn. Stat. §290.05 subd.1(b) and subd.2).
  • The scholarship must be used for educational costs, and the student must be enrolled in the accredited institute in the fall of the school year for which the scholarship is given. (Exceptions may be made at the discretion of REA Management for military service or other extenuating circumstances)

Scholarship Payout

  • Students receiving a scholarship are responsible for providing REA with a copy of their grades at the end of the first quarter/semester attended.
  • Once documentation is received, checks will be made payable to the school and sent to the parent/guardian’s home address on record with REA.
  • Students opting not to attend college in the fall of the school year for which the scholarship is given will forfeit the scholarship. (See the exceptions mentioned above)
